Here are some food options that we recommend. Fresh food is best, but we've listed a dehydrated raw diet option also. If you have to settle for a kibble, we've listed some of the better brands you should consider.

Available Dogs

Here are furkids currently in foster care and ready to meet Forever Families. Since all of our pups are in loving foster homes, as we get to know their personalities and needs, we can then write their bios. If you do not see a story for a particular dog, that means he or she has just recently become a furkid. When we know more about those furkids, we will write their bios.

Since our foster moms and dads have the 'first right of adoption' many times they decide to adopt the furkid they are fostering. If you are interested in fostering (so that you have the right of first adoption,) please email <%= email 'marti@bichonfurkids.org' %>.

Please also remember that with bichons, it is about chemistry, more than gender! More males are born, therefore, more come in to rescue. There are probably as many dominant females as there are submissive males. Most males are not leg lifters (some still squat like females) and belly bands take care of that challenge quickly and easily. With bichons it is all about chemistry - chemistry with you, with other dogs and other breeds!

And that is a testament to my spirit, determination and the amazing care that my foster mom Danna gives me every day. You see I was hit by a car on Dec. 16th, dragged for several blocks and thrown into a dumpster. But I was determined to be heard – and to get another chance – so I got lucky that rainy day and became a FurKid. Now that my legs have healed I am making my way in the world. Hello Everyone!

We are Calvin and Hobbs, a dynamic duo who are about three years old, happy, sweet and loving bichons. We are brothers (a bonded pair) whose family had to give us up – but we became FurKids just a few days later so we are as lucky as we are handsome! We are also very playful little guys. I, Calvin, am the more outgoing, social and playful boy. I’m a few minutes older so I try to set the example for Hobbs. Hobbs is more shy and needs time to get used to new ‘experiences.’ He’s the one who thinks that anything he does should be accompanied by a belly rub – or by sitting in your lap!

We both like to do the bichon dance on our back legs! We are very playful and like to play wrestle with each other – and play ‘chase’. We really like to go for rides (we are very well behaved) and walks. Being on a leash is fairly new to us and we think it is really neat! (Hobbs needs a bit more work on the leash than I do but he’s learning every day.)

Our foster sister says you should see us play tug-of-war. We take turns ‘winning’ and are pretty equal in everything we do!

Dad says that Hobbs has gorgeous brown eyes, loves to be petted, have his head scratched and loves to be held. (Mom says I do, too!) Mom says we are inseparable and happiest when we are together. (We even like to touch each other when we are walking. Guess what else? We turn our heads at the same time! Mom says that’s just about the cutest thing she has ever seen!)

We don’t know any commands yet (like ‘sit’ ‘stay’ ‘lie down) but we want to learn and we do come when we are called. (Dad says he wishes all the FurKids came when they were called!) And we get along well with other dogs and love people.

We are looking for a Forever Family ….and a home where we can love and be loved (and where we can entertain you, too!) If we sound like your kind of boys, please complete an application for us. And nothing would make us happier than to meet you!

Charming Calvin and Handsome Hobbs

Hi Everyone!

My name is Banjo and I’m a happy and beautiful bichon boy, with a heart of gold and a terrific personality. I‘m 11 pounds of sweetness all rolled up into one cuddly package.

Recently my Mom died and it made me very sad. She was my very best friend in the world and we were always together .Mom told me to be very brave and to have faith that a wonderful new Mom would come along – and that we could live out our lives together.

My foster Mom says that I’m a perfect example of all that is wonderful in Bichons! I’m a senior guy with a lot of pep in my step. I still enjoy a good game of tug of war – or a few rounds of fetch. Oh! And I like to walk about a mile each day. It keeps me (and my walking partner) slim and trim.

After a walk or game of fetch, I like to have a ‘reward’! It’s called a belly rub! And there is no doubt, at all, that I L-O-V-E my belly rubs.

Did I mention that I’m also the champion cuddler of all time! That’s what Mom says. She also says to tell you that I like everyone I meet – big and small. Sometimes I’m a little shy at first but I warm up quickly. I’m also extremely well behaved and perfectly housebroken (Mom says that’s another way in which I’m perfect.)

I’m in excellent health, although I’m starting to lose some of my hearing - and my eyes are not as good as they used to be. That doesn’t prevent me from loving life and people! I’m , adorable, loyal, sweet, mellow and loving - and I’m looking for a forever person or family who will love me as much as I will love them.

Hello World!

I’m Ryder, an adorable 6-month-oldpuppy. I’m 10 pounds of cuteness and cuddliness and a pretty mellow guy for a puppy!

Mom says that I’m sweet and smart -a little guy who loves nothing more than playtime and cuddling. My doggy foster brothers think I’m pretty neat, too. They have been teaching me how to do fun things like ‘catch’ and ‘fetch’ and use the doggie door! Because I’m so smart (I’m really not bragging! Mom says so!), I’m almost housebroken already!

Dad is teaching me to be polite when visitors come over. He says that I really want to please and that makes it easy. I’m also learning commands, how to walk nicely on a leash and how to be patient when I’m waiting for a treat.

Mom says I will do best in a home with another furkid and where someone is home most of the day. She says that this will help my affectionate and sunny personality shine through. Since I’m still a puppy, I will also need a family committed to working with me on my training. Maybe we can take a class together! I will be happy to teach you everything I know, and I can’t wait to grow up and be the very best furkid I can be!

Remarkable and Radiant Ryder

Hi People!

My name is Dickens and I’m a happy, sweet and sometimes silly little puppy who is eight weeks old and weighs about three pounds. I’m a happy little guy just full of love, and life, as any little puppy can be. Oh, and did I tell you I like to snuggle? Well, I do!

Did I mention that I love people- and love to give and receive attention to everyone I meet? Right now I’m a champion cuddler and car rider. I am also learning to play and have already learned to go up and down the stairs. Considering how little I am that is quite a feat!

And, according to my Mom, I’m super cute and very smart. I’m also a little mouthy. My foster family is working with me ‘cause my puppy teeth are very sharp. I’m also trying my best to learn to be potty trained (Grandpa says I’m really working hard even though I am so young) He says that my sweet disposition will steal your heart. (Gee Grandpa… thanks!)

Because I am a puppy, I will need a family committed to giving me lots of walks and playtime, along with plenty of love. I would also love going to training with my forever family, so we can learn and grow together.

Darling and Delicious Little Dickens

Hello World,

I’m Sawyer, a handsome and appreciative Bichon mix of three. I’m a playful little guy who is curious, energetic, silly, cute…and lucky: Lucky because I’m safe and in a loving home once again.

You see one day, not very long ago, my mom and dad had to move away. They told me to be a brave boy and then took me to the shelter – and left me. They hadn’t groomed me in a long time so I looked very scraggly and boy! was I scared. No one came to meet me and I wondered if I would ever have a home of my own again. Then, luckily, I became a furkid.

I wasn’t sure about the car ride at first or where I was going. (It was obvious that I didn’t get to ride in the car very often - before.) Then I arrived at this new place called a foster home. My foster mom and dad were really nice, smart and very kind - so I started to relax. At my new home I also have doggy foster brothers and that made me feel safe!

Even though I’m not technically a puppy, I love to play like one. Dad says I like to play FETCH and can play it all day long! I also like to play tug of war. I’m a bit too young and rough for Mom and Dad’s other Bichons – but there’s a young terrier mix down the street that I can play with. We run and chase and romp – and have a great time!

I love my stuffed toys and my favorite one is a blue stuffed bear from my Aunties at BFK. I like it so much that I make holes in it – but Mom is great ‘cause she sews it up again and again because I like my toy(s) so much.

Before I forget, I want you to know that I’m crate trained, almost housebroken (Honestly Mom I haven’t broken a thing!) very active and smart. Dad says I’m becoming a little mellower every day and need my exercise to stay that way. Mom says I would love a couple, or even a single friend with whom I can share special time. I’m just a very grateful boy who would love a real forever home.

So if you are looking for an active, cute, silly, playful, healthy, and curious boy, then I’m the guy for the job. And I will be a wonderful and loving companion if you will be one back and will work with me so I can keep getting better and better.

My name is Jordy and I’m a handsome and delightful little guy! Hello People,

My name is Georgie and I’m a very handsome and delightful guy of three! Mom says I’m so gorgeous that people always approach her so they can meet me – and I’m approachable so that’s a good thing! Besides being handsome and happy, Mom says I have a great personality and temperament. Did I mention that I’m also friendly? Sound good? Then please read on!

Dad says to tell you that I’m strong, agile and well-built – and that I’m also housebroken, love my walks and rides in the car. (Not to brag, but I’m an amazing rider.) Why, when Mom is in the garage putting away groceries, I just jump in the car and lie there quietly (hoping she will want to go somewhere again.) Can you see what a great companion I am?

Speaking of which, I love to meet and greet people! Mom says I’m all about being loved by people, especially by big people. When I meet children I'm very gentle and lick their hands to get attention. But because they move quickly and want to pick me up (or throw their arms around me) my forever home would be best if there were adults -- or perhaps older children.

In the morning, when I first get up I like to run through the house and go to my toy basket and grab whatever is on the top of the pile and throw it up in the air, watch it land, then retrieve it and do it all over again. I’ll do that three or four times, then I’m ready for my human. I love to wrestle gently with a human playmate most of all! You see human touch and interaction is what makes me happiest.

I’m fine with the other furkids and also fine by myself. I don’t bark or have any of that ‘separation anxiety’ stuff. At the end of a busy day I like to snuggle in my doggie bed (and sleep quietly through the night.)

Mom thinks that I would do well in almost any situation where I can give and receive lots of love and attention! So, if you’re interested in a gorgeous boy who is loving, curious, happy and also mellow, then ask for Georgie. I’ll be waiting!

There is no doubt that I’m cute, sweet, funny and have lots of energy. Did you know that I’m also housebroken, crate trained (I like to sleep next to my foster sister. Mom says I have a crush on her.) I also love to go for walks and car rides. Yes, sir and m’am, that’s all true.

Mom says I’m working on my commands and the one I know best is ‘sit’ (‘cause when she tries to teach me anything else I try to get her to play instead!). ’ She says I’m so smart that there are a lot more commands she’s going to teach me – when she can get me to slow down, that is.

I love to cuddle and be with people. Did I mention that Mom says I have this way of resting my head on the top of my foot and looking up at her? She says when I look at her that way she just melts.

I like other fur kids a lot but can also be an only 'kid' in my forever home! I do, however, need someone with 'dog savvy.' I asked Mom what that meant and she said it means someone who understands this thing called 'boundaries' and 'being an alpha owner.' I asked her if there are people who know all about that and she assured me that there are!

Hello People!

My name is Lucky and I am a very handsome and happy Bichon of about eleven with a calm and mellow personality. I’m an easy going guy who gets along well with everyone – big people, little people, all sizes and shapes, too. I love other dogs and they love me ‘cause I’m gentle and sweet. The only things I don’t like are elephants and giraffes (sorry guys but you’re just too big for me!)

Dad says I love to sunbathe (the sun is good for us bichons you know!) cuddle and snuggle – and that I’m about the sweetest and most mellow bichon he has ever met. In fact Dad says I’m good natured and gentle.

Mom says to tell you that I’m housebroken and easy-going. I like walks and rides in the car. Dad says I’m amazingly cool in the car - I just watch the scenery go by and am happy to be with my family.

Because I have a hearing loss, Mom has taught me hand signals. And since I’m smart and want to please, I do everything I can to be near her. She says I just gaze up at her with my beautiful brown eyes and give her dreamy looks – and she’ll give me whatever I want. (More belly rubs please!)

I am such an easy going guy that I will do well in just about any family situation. Especially if you are home a lot! It would be nice (but not necessary) to have other furkids. So if you are looking for a mellow, gentle, cuddly, affectionate and adaptable fellow who no longer does wind sprints but is a loyal companion, look no further. I’m here and I’m ready to meet you.

Hello Everybody!

My name is Nicholas and I have quite a story to tell. Let me start by telling you I am a miracle! And that is a testament to my spirit, determination and the amazing care that my foster mom Danna gives me every day.

You see I was hit by a car on Dec. 16th, dragged for several blocks and thrown into a dumpster. But I was determined to be heard – and to get another chance – so I got lucky that rainy day and became a FurKid.

Now that my legs have healed I am making my way in the world. Mom says I am a real trooper, never complain about anything, whimper or cry. Instead I have this happy smile on my face and I make a game and fun out of anything.

Dad says I am playful, silly and always a gentleman. For example I LOVE my yellow "loofah dog". I love to shake him back and forth, fling him in the air and catch him. Not bad for a guy whose legs are healing, right? Dad says it is cute and funny to watch me "groom" my stuffed toys. I like to lick them and give them little "nips" to groom them. He says it's really funny to see how careful and determined I am with that grooming. I also like to play tug-o-war with my doggy foster sister. In the end I always let her have the toy because I am a gentleman!

Mom says I also have this "‘thing" about balls, large and small. I even like the big medicine ball we use for my physical therapy. My favorite non-toys however are pine cones. I like to pick them up, give them a good shake, fling them in the air, catch them - and chew them up There is no doubt that I am very entertaining.

I am crate trained, good with other dogs and cats, love to ride in the car, can walk amazingly fast and get along great with people of all sizes and shapes. I am now doing physical therapy every week so I can regain strength and function in my back legs. Soon I can also begin to meet adopters, too, because Mom and Dad agree that I deserve the very bestest forever home in the world.

By the way, the clinic Mom takes me to every day has a nickname for me that also describes me to a "‘t." See if you can figure it out (I am going to give you a hint right now. They love me there and say that my name could be Crash - C is for CUTE, R is for Remarkable, A is for Adorable, S is for Super and H is for Heroic. Put them together and they spell Crash (but you can call me Nicholas.)

“Making a Difference in a Dog's Life”

Hi Bichon Lovers,

The fourth issue of our 2012 newsletter is here. We hope you will find it an enjoyable read, with information about our Bichon Bash, the Orange County Pet Expo, Cody’s happy adoption story and another important article on contaminated dog food.

We are moving into fourth gear for the Spring Bichon Bash in Irvine (May 19.th) Please check email for your invitation - and please RSVP if you have not already. We are expecting more than 200 furkids and their parents to attend – and more than 125 have registered. We have also found a location to host the Fall Bichon Bash in San Diego! We will be sharing all those details at the Spring Bash! As a result, 2012 will be the first year that we host two Bichon Bashes. You know the saying: “Double your pleasure, double your fun! “

We have three new furkids in our Help Me Heal program. Puppy Sammy had just been adopted and about to join his forever family when one of his knees ‘popped’. Like Cooper last month, this “trick knee” subluxation of patella, or floating patella, was diagnosed – and the family decided not to adopt him.

While under anesthesia the doctor discovered that Sammy, like Cooper, actually had luxating patellas on both rear legs. While the second patella surgery was unexpected, we proceeded – and Sammy is now recovering with foster parents Lynn and Dave Bodine taking wonderful care of the little guy.

Our other little ‘Healing Bichons’ are a senior bichon named Mick and a little ‘peanut’ named Davey. Mick has a golf ball-sized mass and a couple of other medical issues. As a senior in the shelter no one even looked at him. Once he walked out those doors, as a furkid, he had a spring in his step and a happy smile on his face. The other little guy is Davey, whose jaw is fractured in two places. Davey will be meeting our indominitable Dr. Mac tomorrow, so that she can restore him to health. Foster parents Amy and Marcus say he is a delightful and happy little boy and we have great faith in Dr. Mac, the Stonecreek staff and Davey’s recovery.

A Word About Hair

Bichons and Bichon mixes need to be groomed regularly. When not tended to, their hair (not fur) tends to grow very long and then mat if not brushed or combed. The kindest thing we can do, when we take in a dog in this condition, is to shave it down.

In a matter of weeks, beautiful, white, healthy hair will grow. So, if you see a dog that's available and it's a little short on hair... know that it will be a beautiful white, fluffy, haired darling within a few weeks. Read Ace's story.

BFK Belly Bands

Belly Bands are for male dogs who are "marking your home", are incontinent or just need help with housetraining. Our Belly Bands are made of cotton for a comfortable fit and are easy to wash. Place a sanitary pad (not included) inside of the band so you can dispose of the urine caused by accidents and then re-use the belly band before needing to wash it.

We recommend having two belly bands so that while one belly band is being laundered, the second belly band can be worn. If you have more than one male furkid and are not sure which boy is your "marker," we suggest putting one belly band on each boy and frequently check their pads for urine. This can also give you peace of mind that your male furkid is not urinating in the house while unsupervised.

To figure out what size belly band your furkid needs, wrap a measuring tape (or piece of string) loosely around his belly, just in front of his hind legs and over his penis. A loose measurement will give you the allowance needed to have the pad inside the belly band.

As Bichon Bash X approaches the need for dedicated and committed volunteers to support the event becomes crucial. We host over 250 guests and their families and five or six volunteers just can't do it all. We need volunteers for set-up on Friday night, for the booths (Bichon Boutique, Adoption Alley, Volunteer Villa, and others), the registration table, and even for poop scoop duty.

If you would like to make a difference at the 2012 Bichon Bash X, simply e-mail our Event Coordinator, Michele Olivier michele@bichonfurkids.org as soon as possible. Other Bash Volunteer Opportunities

There are many volunteer opportunities on the day of the event. If you plan on attending but don't feel you can take on any of the volunteer responsibilities listed above, please consider volunteering for a few hours on the day of the event.

SETUP: Assist with setup for event, including set up and placement of canopies, tables and chairs for Exhibit booths, guest seating and the staging area; covering all tables, set up of AV and sound equipment; posting signage; moving materials and supplies from storage to appropriate event areas, placement of water dishes, poop bags, recycle and trash cans; whatever is needed to get ready for the Bash. Critical job! Requires 10-15 volunteers on the afternoon before the event and in the morning of the event from 7:00 A.M until 10:00 a.m.

REGISTRATION: Greet guests; verify registration; issue wristbands, lunch tickets, programs and nametags; receive “at the door” payments and donations; direct volunteers to Volunteer Villa; manage and monitor double gate entry. Requires at least 4 volunteers per hour from 9:15 to 1:00

PARKING: Assist with monitoring the parking lot and traffic. Requires 2 volunteers per hour from 9:30 to 11:00

ACTIVITY AIDES: Assist with handing out programs, wristbands, lunch tickets, nametags, gift bags; sell raffle tickets, register contest participants. Assist with FurKids in the Adoption Alley. Assist in Volunteer Villa and Photography booth. Assist with lunch set up, keep food and drink organized and food area clear. Requires 4 -6 volunteers per hour from 10:00 to 1:00.

SALES: Assist with product sales in the Bichon Boutique and any food or soda booths. Assist with raffle ticket sales at registration table and throughout event area. Requires 2-4 volunteers per hour from 10:00 to 2:00.

RUNNERS: This is a vital position. The “runners” pinch hit when and wherever there is a need – substituting for other volunteers during breaks, filling in when no volunteer is available, and assisting the event committee with various special needs. Flexibility is key. Requires 2 volunteers per hour from 10:00 to 2:00.

CLEANUP: Assist with dismantling and collecting canopies, tables, chairs, water dishes, poop bags, recycle and trash cans; clean up grounds and put away equipment, supplies, etc. Load materials and supplies for return to storage. Critical job! After a long day, it’s very hard to muster the effort to help clean up from the day’s event. The more help we have, the easier the job is for everyone! If you can stay after 3:00 p.m., please consider staying to help.

About the Bash

Bichon FurKids Rescue (BFK), a charitable not-for-profit animal rescue organization, is dedicated to rescuing, restoring and re-homing Bichons, Bichon mixes and other small breeds. Over the last six years, we have rescued and placed nearly 2000 FurKids in loving and responsible forever homes. Medical attention, spaying/neutering and grooming were provided for each FurKid prior to adoption.

The annual "Bichon Bash" is the primary fundraising event to support our rescue efforts. As those of you who have attended previously know, this is a truly special event. Please join us for our Parade of Rescues, Volunteer Recognition, Adoption Alley Pet Adoptions, the Vendor Faire, dog contests, lots of food, drinks and camaraderie. Last year nearly 300 people attended the event with over 150 of their FurKids.

It is a great day for those of us who love bichons - and we hope to see you there!

Our Special Angels

Each month a very special little angel comes into rescue – a little bichon whose needs are greater than the others. For most of them to be ‘whole’ requires a major surgery. Each of these little angels has a special story to tell and is an inspiration for those of us that rescue and love them.

You can contribute to their well being, sponsor a special angel or help us to foster him or her when it is time to leave the hospital. Whatever you do helps these fur kids, and the ones that follow, to live healthier and better lives, will be rewarding to them and to you – and we thank you for your support.

Forever Foster Program

In January 2010 Bichon FurKids launched our Forever Foster program. Our vision was to make it possible to care for those bichons who, because of health, temperament, age or background, might not be good candidates for adoption. We felt strongly then, and now, that despite their special needs, whatever they might be, these dogs should live out their lives in loving homes, being cared for with respect and dignity.

The program was launched as a result of a generous donation from an adopter and bichon-lover who wishes to remain anonymous. All donations to that Fund are managed separately; BFK continues to look for opportunities to expand and grow the fund. That was the genesis of our Forever Foster Program and continues to be its mission.

The dogs accepted into the Forever Foster Program are very special pups. Some have chronic health problems which require an unusual amount of care and expense; some are severely disabled; others are elderly or have terminal medical conditions. Euthanasia is not an option for these dogs unless their quality of life is compromised. Instead, their medical expenses are covered by Bichon FurKids while their foster moms and dad provide the physical care and love they need and deserve.

In order for us to maintain the best quality of life for our Forever Fosters, we require additional assistance in the form of donations. The donations we receive through our Adoption Program can never cover the medical expenses we have accumulated in the care of rescued dogs. If you would like to become a special part of one these little furkids’ lives, please consider becoming a Sponsor. A Sponsor can make monetary donations or provide supplies for their use in the Forever Foster Home. Sponsorships may be one time donations or timed payments to help cover the costs of medical care, treatment or recovery All monetary and material donations will go to the particular Forever Foster dog you specify.

Your financial gift will help us continue to save many more dogs, and to provide our Forever Fosters a life of ease and contentment. Special Angel Nicholas -- Hit and Run Survivor!

Hi people,
My name is Nicholas and I'm a friendly and fearless little bichon boy who is also very special. You see, someone was driving VERY fast and didn't see me. He hit and dragged me for several blocks - then threw me in a dumpster!

But I wanted to live - so I made a lot of noise and suddenly I was on my way to being rescued. While I didn't look very good, and my back legs were badly scraped and bruised my heart was strong and determined to recover fully. Why my foster mom says I don't act like a guy who has any limitations. I'm happy, loving and even playful.

My care has been long and a bit complicated. My legs have healed and I'm learning to use them again. I have a very special cart that helps me to get around - and I'm pretty quick even without 'my wheels.'

If you would like to help me get better and even meet me some day, I'd love that. The most important thing to know is that I'm lucky and happy to be alive. And I'm determined to walk again on all four legs and then jump into your lap and give you kisses.
