Here are furkids who are currently in foster care and ready to begin meeting Forever Families. Since all of our pups are in a loving foster homes, as we get to know their personalities and needs, we then write their bios. If you do not see a story for a particular dog, that means he or she has just recently become a furkid. When we know more about those furkids, we will write their bios. Since our foster moms and dads have the 'first right of adoption' many of our furkids will not have bios written, as their foster families know all about them. Hello Everyone!

My name is Chablis and I’m a happy active little 2-year old bichon who just loves to please! Even though I may not be a puppy anymore, I still have the energy of one! Want to play ball? Take a run? Go to the park? Then I’m your guy. Mom says I’d so amazingly well at agility because I can jump high, avoid obstacles and I love to learn all sorts of new tricks.

I’m already housebroken (no typo there!) so I get to sleep in the big bed at night! Dad says I stick to Mom’s side like glue and during the night like to curl up into a tight ball and snuggle as close as I can! (Mom says I get an ‘A’ in cuddling!)

During the day, I just LOVE to play and go on walks especially! I love to try and get one of my doggy foster sister to chase me by teasing her -- until she finally gives in and tries and catch me! Dad says that I run back and forth and pretend that she is going to catch me and then, poof, I run away again! Mom says that not only am I fast, but I’m EXTREMELY smart, which is probably why I always win! And I thought up that game all by myself!

Mom says I’m 11 pounds of fun who loves everyone. She says I will go to the ends of the earth to earn your attention and affection. With a bit of training and lots of love, I’ll be the bestest buddy ever! So if you’re looking for an active, playful, bright and loving Bichon boy, please ask for Chablis and I’ll be waiting with my tail wagging.

Hello World,

I’m Snowball -- a very cute 2-year-old Bichon boy who weighs 12 pounds soaking wet. My foster mom says that good things come in small packages and I’m an incredibly cute ‘package.’ (Mom says I’m ‘darn near perfect.” I’m not sure what that means but she smiles when she says it!)

Since I became a FurKid I have learned how to play. Now I love to play chase and roll around with my doggy foster brother and sister. Sometimes I throw my toys and chase them. Other times I kind of ‘borrow’ toys from them. Dad says I am just a fun loving little guy. Sometimes I walk around the house playing my squeaky toy like a musical instrument, Mom says I. have a good beat already.

Want to go for a walk? Or a ride? Then I’m your guy. Right now I get to walk along a golf course, do some sniffing, watch the ducks and meet my morning friends. And I get to practice my commands while I am walking. Mom says I listen really well (!), am very smart and want to please.

Dad says I am crate trained however I prefer snuggling in the bed when I can. Mom says I’m housebroken, as long as I get my walks.

Both my folks say I’m a perfect little gentleman who would make anyone a great companion. They say I’m amazingly mellow and calm for my age, both willing and attentive, as well as loving and oh so sweet!

Sweet and Smart Snowball

Hi People,

My name is Ethan and I'm an adorable little bichon boy of almost two years old. Mom says I'm a comical, entertaining, adorable and energized pup who also happens to be really smart and very attentive (She says that’s a really great combination in a cute little body!)

I'm an active little guy who loves just about everything. I'm very curious and loving. Why I not only love adults but I even like kitties! I like to walk (Mom says I do really well on a leash) and I love to ride in the car. But most of all, I like to play with my doggy foster brother, whether it's teasing him with toys, wrestling, or doing a mini-Bichon buzz around the house. Someday soon I’ll be able to do a ‘full’ bichon buzz. And I just can’t wait!

You see, before Bichon FurKids rescued me, I was hit by a car and had a really bad boo boo...It has been two months since I had my surgery but next week I hope to have my very last x-ray and have our wonderful vets tell me I’m totally healed. I’ve been such a good and patient boy and am raring to go. That’s why Mom says “we need to restrict the running around for right now!” (She says “we” bur she means me. I guess I understand but I feel so much better now… and well a boy wants to run!) Everyone says I have a promising future ahead, and that soon I'll be able to bounce, run and chase like the other furkids!

Mom says I am just one of the brightest boys she's ever had... I'm already housebroken and when I need to go out, I start pacing back and forth to show I need a walk! (How's that for being a good boy?) And I already know commands like: come, sit, drop - and I’m learning many new tricks, too! When it's time for bed, I flop anywhere my people are, and then Dad will tuck me into a bed just my size, and I will sleep perfectly throughout the night!

Dad says I’m quite a character. For instance he says I love taking new and fun things to my bed to play with. After I eat my breakfast, I pick up my bowl and bring it to my bed! Dad says it's the funniest thing he's ever seen, but I kind of like the idea of breakfast in bed! Since there are lots of toys and stuffed animals here when I find one I really like, I take that to my bed too! One of my favorite "toys" is not a toy at all—it’s a rolled up piece of paper! Everyone thinks it’s amazing how the littlest things can bring so much happiness to a beautiful boy like me, but that's what life is all about!

I'm a very joyful, playful, silly, cuddly and cute little boy who deserves a home where I can have a loving buddy to play and love! So if you have a yard that I can explore, another furkid that needs some good company, or are just looking for a very loveable and energetic companion, then please ask for me, Ethan!

Hi People!

I’m Bradley, a playful one year old Bichon boy who loves other dogs! And I want everyone to know it ‘cause Life is Good! I love my foster family and their three dogs! I love car rides! And guess what? I love to play! Especially ‘Chase me.’ Why I even got my Mom to do that when she was knitting - and I kind of ‘borrowed’ some of her yarn then ran away. Boy did she laugh as she was chasing me. Whee, what fun!

Mom says that I have the cutest face, am very smart and that I love to please. I’m still in housebreaking training... but I know to wait to go outside. I mastered the doggy door in no time and she says any day now I will be completely housebroken. Mom knows that is one of my goals - and hers, too! (She’s doing a really good job so you’ll have to tell her!)

I have learned my name and Dad says I actually come when anyone calls me. (He says his own fur kids don’t do that so he hopes I will influence them.) I’m learning lots of human words like: ‘sit’, ‘stop’ and ‘wait’. I like my bone and chew toy (Mom says I would never chew on anything that was not appropriate) And I like showing people how much I appreciate this wonderful world we live in. I’m just a happy, healthy, exuberant little guy who loves life.

Dad says I’m a little ball of fire, friendly, playful and never aggressive. He says I like to cuddle and that I will jump up on the couch to cuddle for a while, then I have to say ‘Good bye’ and go off to play. That’s what happy, energetic and sweet little pups like me like to do!

I would love to have my own family to share my joy and love, and a doggy brother or sister to learn from and play with. In return, I will do my best to keep everyone smiling and feeling important and loved. (That will be easy for me because whatever family adopts me will be my whole world.)

Hi Everyone,

My name is Percy and I’m a dream of a bichon puppy! My foster Mom says I’m a loving and friendly guy of only about one who just adores people - of all shapes, sizes and ages! I especially love meeting and making new friends (Mom says I do that very well!) and I’m ALWAYS happy. I have a real zest for life and there’s never a dull moment with me! )She says watch out... ‘cause I’ll charm your socks off!)

Dad says I like to play with my purple plush toy that makes "puppy noises." It’s quite a curious little toy and I just adore doing the Bichon buzz with it - although I don’t quite get why it doesn’t buzz with me! I love going for walks (I would prefer to run!) and rides. And he says I love to snuggle. Why if you give me a belly rub I’ll fall asleep right there in your arms!

I’m a lucky little guy, too, ‘cause I have two great foster doggie sisters who I simply adore! I love prancing around with them and doing the Bichon buzz! Mom says I’m good at entertaining myself when they don’t want to play. You see, I’m like the energizer bunny... I just keep going and going and going! I love to run around in the house or yard until I tire myself out for a cozy nap.

I am smart( I learned to use the doggy door in minutes!) already housebroken, love to cuddle and give lots of smooches! Mom says I really want to please and to be loved! Sometimes when she pets my foster sister and I nudge her with my nose and squirm into her arms so that she’ll pet me instead! (She says that proves how smart I am.) And, because I’m such a good boy, I get to sleep in the big bed with Mom and Dad (and my foster sisters) all night long. When it gets a bit crowded I just jump down and sleep in my crate just so I can stretch out my little body!

Dad says I’m a very happy boy, in fact I’m so happy you can see it in my big black eyes! I’m a very joyful, silly, sweet, playful and bright boy who deserves a home where I can love and be loved unconditionally. Like all young furkids, I need to be in a home where someone is around most of the time - a person or family that can keep up with my boundless amounts of energy!

Playful Percy

Hello World,

We are Queenie and Princess, a dynamic duo of about two years old, weigh 12 and 7 pounds respectively. We are happy, sweet and loving little girls. We are two playful pups who like to wrestle with each other and do the Bichon buzz... and we really like to go for rides and walks, as long as we’re together! Being outside on a leash is new to us and we think it is really neat! We love exploring the big, wide world - and we also like to tussle and chase our bichon foster sister in the yard. Running and tumbling is great fun -- and it always makes us ready for a nap together!

Mom says we are two of the most loving furkids she’s ever fostered... EVER! That is quite a compliment because she’s had lots and lots of wonderful furkids, but I guess our kisses upon kisses upon kisses won her over! (And we are sure to win yours too!) We love everyone and are always happy to do anything to please! Dad says we have the greatest way of making people feel comfortable and happy!

I'm Princess and I'm delicate and am definitely the leader! Mom says I'm affectionate, outgoing, playful and vocal - and that I love attention. Queenie is sweet, gentle, and quite the cuddler. She is really great because she doesn’t mind that I love living in the lime-light - as long as she gets some loving, too!

I adore all the people I’ve met, especially little children. They are the perfect size to cuddle with! Queenie wanted to cuddle with the cat - but he wasn’t interested (he likes her though... just doesn’t want to show it, I think.)

We are two smart and affectionate fur kids who want to please. We are housebroken (and will let you know too!), know how to sit, stay and come - and we are ready to learn even more! We are just two darling inseparable little girls who are happiest when we can snuggle together. (We even like to squeeze into the same crate or lay with each other at the foot of the big bed!)

Hi Wonderful People.

My name is Sierra and I’m a little Bichon girl of about three, with a sweet face and gorgeous hair. I was rescued from a bad situation and, as a result, I’m incredibly happy to be living with my foster Dad. I think he’s just about the best thing that ever happened to me. He’s teaching me all kinds of things and I’m learning really fast!

Dad is nice, kind and smart. While I prefer the company of women and children so far, I’m learning that men can be nice, too! Dad is very patient and understands that I secretly like him. And I really respect him, too!

I have lots of foster doggy fur kids but I don’t pay a lot of attention to them. You see I’d rather play with my wubba. (Aunt Marti didn’t know what a wubba is. Geez, Aunt Marti. It’s a fabric covered ball with legs!) You see I like to play fetch with my wubba. I can throw it in the air and retrieve it, too. Dad says I always have it with me - and that I take it to my bed (along with anything else I can find.) Dad’s learning to be very tidy but if he’s missing a cup. an empty box, some Kleenexes... well he can often find them in my bed!

Dad says I am sweet, mellow, affectionate, playful and just so darn cute! If I see him hold the leash, I know that means walk time (goody, goody) ‘cause I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my walks! Why I jump up and down to show Dad how excited I am to go on. And after my last walk of the night, my favorite place to sleep is on the couch. I kind of like to have it all to myself and Dad’s bed is so crowded with other furkids that I don’t mind at all.

When people come to the door, I do bark. If I like the people I stop my barking right away. If I don’t like them then I need to go into my crate so I can stop my barking. Dad’s working with me on that one thing. He says I’m so smart that I’m really getting it and making lots of progress. (And if you take the time to introduce me to people then I don’t bark at all.)

I would be happiest in a home with a nice lady who wanted an adorable, loving and protective little girl friend. We could hang out and do our hair and nails and I would keep my Forever Mom laughing and smiling and as happy as I would be in her company. That would be just perfect! I think a young doggy brother could be fun as well.

Greetings everyone!

My name is Cookie - and I’m a playful, sweet and very affectionate bichon girl of two. Mom says I’m a little love bug - and that I love giving kisses and am excited to greet everyone. Big or small, girl or boy, man or woman - everyone gets (and loves!) my kisses.

Mom says I just love Dad and if she wants to know where I am, all she has to do is find Dad, (He never thought a little white fluffy girl could be so enchanting! Dad thought I would be the kid’s lovebug (which I am) but he found he can’t resist me.

When it comes to cuddling, the family says I get an A++. I’m also great with other dogs - but Mom’s not sure how I am with cats, giraffes and elephants. You see Mom and Dad don’t have any of those around... but I’d probably be ok with them too.

Dad says I’m very fun loving, sweet, and friendly little gal - and that there is no doubt that I am very smart. I come when I am called, sit on command, and am learning many new ways to impress. He also says that I’m cute, curious and quite the social butterfly. Silly Dad! I’m a Bichon, not a bug! (Though I’m quite the cuddle-bug so I guess that’s what Dad means!)

I am a very well behaved girl and an even better mother! You see, when BFK rescued me, I had two 2 day-old puppies! I was always very nurturing, sweet and loyal to my pups. Now that they are much older, I love playing fun games with them like wrestling and the Bichon buzz, but I’m always careful to be extra gentle! Dad says it’s actually kind of funny watching me play with my puppies because sometimes when they’re not paying close attention, I like to steal their treats and cookies from them! He says that my name is actually short for "Cookie Monster" but hey! I think I earned those treats!

Mom says to tell you that I walk well on a leash and love going for rides! I also love being bathed and groomed. It feels SO good! And I like to be where the action is! Sometimes when I get excited, I stand on my hind legs and do the Bichon wave to get attention! (It always works! The family just loves to see me ‘in action.’)

A Bit About Bichons

Bichons and Bichon mixes need to be groomed regularly. When not tended to, their hair (not fur) tends to grow very long and then mat if not brushed or combed. The kindest thing we can do, when we take in a dog in this condition, is to shave it down.

In a matter of weeks, beautiful, white, healthy hair will grow. So, if you see a dog that's available and it's a little short on hair,... know that it will be a beautiful white, fluffy, haired darling within a few weeks. Read Ace's story by clicking on this photo.

Miley gets her first bath!

Our little survivor, Miley, was allowed to get her first bath in quarantine today. You can tell how much better she feels – and how much happier she is. Although she still cannot have contact with any other dogs or people, she has taken a real liking to her hero, Dr. Glass. We thank him, Nadine Glass and the staff at Stonecreek for providing a loving place for Miley to heal.

Each day she gets better – (and, according to Dr. Glass, sweeter) however she must still stay in a kennel by herself, waiting (we hope) for her original owner to show up and prove that she was inoculated for rabies. Without that certificate Miley has many more months of quarantine and isolation ahead of her.

Still in quarantine, but much happier!

What a difference a week can make

As Miley approaches her first week of quarantine, we can tell that she is getting better already. Her wounds from the coyote attack are starting to heal - and she is eating and drinking well. Miley is counting the days, and months, until she can be in a loving home again.

Eye Witness Account of Miley's Attack

I spoke to one of the two gentlemen who saw Miley's attack and scared the coyote off. According to Zak B., he and his buddy Jeff K. were waiting to chip their golf balls onto the first green at the golf course about 4:30Pm on Sunday, May 24th. Jeff spotted Miley about 50-70 feet away and before they could even finish saying, "Hey, look at that dog on the course," they saw the coyote approach. At first they thought it was another dog, but within seconds they saw it attack Miley.

Zak said the coyote did a typical behavior, which is to approach its prey as if to befriend it, so the animal doesn't run off. Then it attacked. The coyote grabbed Miley around her mid-section and she started wiggling. The coyote dropped her and by then Zak & Jeff were running toward them, screaming at the coyote and waiving their golf club (chippers). Miley put up a fight, which kept the coyote from running off with her. Zak and Jeff got closer they threw their golf clubs at the coyote and it dropped Miley and ran back toward the river bed nearby.

She was shaking and bleeding and seemed very traumatized, so they kept vigil but at a distance since they didn’t want to scare her off and have her run right back to the coyote. As they waited for the course manager and crew to arrive in their carts, the coyote stood by and just watched them … apparently waiting for them to leave so he could reclaim his prize. Once the carts arrived, t he coyote ran off under the riverbed tunnel.

After the carts arrived, Miley laid there about 5 minutes. They were going to wait for animal control to arrive, but Miley jumped into one of the carts, between the legs of the driver (near the foot pedals, as if to say, "Take me away from here!"

Zak was happy to hear that she survived the attack and is doing well. He commented that she was obviously someone's pet, as she was clean and friendly and it was obvious she had not been away from her owner for long. They thought that since she had a collar and tag on, Animal Control could locate the owners. He was surprised to hear that it wasn't a tag but just a charm with no information.

Zak did tell me that the park was very crowded that day with a Memorial Day baseball tournament sponsored by Fountain Valley Pony League going on with many teams from out of the area. I did send an email to their organization to see if anyone might have reported losing a dog. However, he also said there were many barbeques and family gatherings occurring that day in addition to the baseball.

So, our little girl is indeed a fighter and she is lucky those two were there when they were to save her.

Dog that survived coyote attack has new lease on life

A poodle-bichon frise mix that survived a coyote attack and was found wandering at the Miles Square Park golf course in Fountain Valley has been moved into a foster group’s care.

web-bichon-bittenThe dog, which had been recovering at O.C. Animal Care, will be cared for by veterinarian Jeff Glass at Stonecreek Animal Hospital in Irvine for two months, according to Buffy Schnurbusch with Bichon FurKids.

"We are ecstatic!" Buffy Schnurbusch said in an e-mail to me late last night. "After the two months, Miley can be released to a foster home in O.C. where she will be checked monthly by O.C. Animal Control. At the end of the six-month period, she will be available for adoption."

The nonprofit pet rescue group had requested of Animal Control the opportunity to foster the dog, which will require a six-month quarantine. Bichon FurKids has named the female mutt "Miley," after her Wiley Coyote misadventure.

So far, no owner has stepped forward to claim the woebegone little dog. Because she was bitten by a wild animal, the quarantine is a mandatory precaution to ensure she’s not infected with rabies.

Without proof of a rabies vaccine, the law requires a pet be quarantined. The cost associated with such quarantines is often offset by nonprofit pet rescue groups.

Bichon FurKids will be accepting donations from folks who have responded to the group’s to help Miley. Donation can be made at the rescue’s Web site.

"We know this is a lot of energy and effort for one dog when we have so many... but that’s what rescue is about, buffy said. "As we say, "Saving a life, one dog at a time."

Bichon mix on death row after coyote attack

A poodle mix was found after an apparent coyote attack and was turned in to O.C. Animal Care Services. The dog had no ID and no proof or rabies vaccine on her turquoise collar, so without contact from her owners, the fate of this cute dog is grim. Here’s the story from Buffy Schnurbusch at Bichon FurKids:

There is a little female poodle-bichon mix at OC Shelter who was brought in after being attacked by a coyote. She was found at the golf course at Miles Square Park in Fountain Valley and will be euthanized soon if her owners can’t be located with hopes they can show proof of rabies vaccination.

My bichon rescue group is willing to take her and treat her, but she cannot be released to us without rabies vaccination proof. The owners have not come forward to the shelter. They tell us she was relatively clean and recently groomed, so she obviously was someone’s pet. She is wearing a turquoise collar with a small bone charm, but has no id information or microchip.

Happy Adoptions

Every week a number of fur kids become part of Bichon Fur Kids. They are in foster care - and not yet listed on our web site. While they are part of these very giving foster families, the new fur kids are receiving lots of love, learning how to walk on leashes, ride in cars, frolic in the grass - and experiencing being around children, other dogs and sometimes cats! Our goal is for them to become the very best dogs that they can be - and to find their Forever Homes as soon as they are ready.

We add new FurKids to our family each week - so please check back often.

And remember, the first step to adopt any of our FurKids is to complete our adoption application - and then to schedule your home safety check.

These playful puppies went from rescue to near death and were saved by the angels at Bichon FurKids Rescue. What a wonderful outcome that they will be together in the same forever home.

Bichon mix saved from death row after coyote attack!

Miley is a little female bichon-poodle mix who was brought to the Orange County shelter after being attacked by a coyote. She was found on the golf course at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley and would have been euthanized, had it not been for the efforts of Bichon FurKids and Stonecreek Animal Hospital in Irvine.

Unless her owners come forward, she will need to stay in quarantine for 6 months. Miley was clean and recently groomed so she obviously was someone’s pet. She is wearing a turquoise collar with a small bone charm, but has no id information or microchip.

Each month a very special little angel comes into rescue – a little bichon whose needs are greater than the others. For most of them to be ‘whole’ requires a major surgery. Each of these little angels has a special story to tell and is an inspiration for those of us that rescue and love them.

Foster Homes Needed!

As we head into the spring and summer, more and more fur kids are entering rescue.

If you can help by fostering for a week or two, please email <%= email 'info@bichonfurkids.org' %>. We provide vetting, food, harnesses, leashes and collars – and ask you to provide a loving environment and training.

Junior Volunteers, whose families can foster, can also earn community and school credit for their help.
