A Forever Family Dream Come True

My husband was adamantly opposed to getting a dog. Yet my two kids, who are 14 and 13, have spent the last 5 years begging for one. I thought it would never happen. Then one day I went to Petfinder looking for a rescue dog and there he was: Charger - I couldn't get his face out of my head.

I showed Charger's photo to my husband and he grinned broadly. He started to soften. I contacted Bichon FurKids and they were very thorough in checking us out to make sure we'd provide a good home for Charger.

The day we met him, we knew he was meant for us. He is so sweet and gentle and well behaved. The joy he has brought our family is immeasurable. The kids are just in love with this guy and continuously e-mail me saying "I cannot believe we got such a perfect dog!"

Just now I looked over and saw him sleeping on my husband's chest. It's official: we can't imagine our life without Charger the Lovebug.

Since all of our pups are in a loving foster homes, as we get to know their personalities and needs, we then write their bios. If you do not see a story for a particular dog, that means he or she has just recently become a furkid. When we know more about those furkids, we will write their bios.

Since our foster moms and dads have the 'first right of adoption' many of our furkids will not have bios written, as their foster families know all about them.

Holly was rescued from a local shelter and had puppies (four boys and three girls) on Friday, Jan. 6th. Here are the puppies at three weeks. Their eyes are open and they are starting to walk (or tumble.) They weigh about one pound, are sweet, adorable and all puppy love! The puppies appear to have hair, not fur, like their Mom. Over the next few weeks, as their hair grows, we may have a better idea of what they are mixed with - for now, it's obvious that they are mixed with cuteness. We are now accepting applications for the puppies. Approved adopters can begin to meet them in early Feb. and bring them home in early March. We will continue to post new photos every week.

My name is Billy and I'm a little guy with a bit of a challenge. You see my previous owners were not very careful about my 'whereabouts' and I got out and was hit by a car. They didn't even look for me which made me sad - but things are now looking up! I became a FurKid officially on Sat. and I'm scheduled for surgery on Wed. A very special doctor (I think they said he was an orthopedic surgeon but to me he's just a nice guy) will be operating on me. He says that I will heal and be good as new in a few months. And that is a testament to my spirit, determination and the amazing care that my foster mom Danna gives me every day. You see I was hit by a car on Dec. 16th, dragged for several blocks and thrown into a dumpster. But I was determined to be heard – and to get another chance – so I got lucky that rainy day and became a FurKid. Now that my legs have healed I am making my way in the world. Hi Everyone,

My name is Aimee - and I’m a sweet, smart and bouncy little bichon mix who is seven months old and a very happy puppy.

Mom wants you to know that I am absolutely adorable and very entertaining. She often catches me looking at myself in the mirror, tilting my head from side to side and ‘talking’ to the puppy in the mirror! The funny thing is that the puppy does everything I do. Isn’t that the silliest thing you ever heard?

Dad says that I am friendly and could be the official ‘greeter’ for the house. You see whenever anyone comes over I run to greet them and make them feel welcome. I am one friendly girl!

He says I’m also “all puppy.” I’m playful, full of life and spirit (just ask my doggy foster brother!) I love to play with toys and especially love my Nylabone and my rubber ball. I can throw either into the air and then play fetch. My doggy foster brother and I also play chase and ‘explore’. That’s so much fun! Of course, after a round of play I’m happy to curl up quietly in your lap, give you kisses and take a nap. (After all I need my beauty sleep!)

Although I’m just a youngster, I am housebroken (and that is not a typo!), good on walks and love to ride in the car. Mom and Dad are teaching me commands and I am learning them quickly. Like all puppies, I will need a forever family who will continue my training so that I can be the bestest girl ever!

Because I am so energetic and still learning so much, I might be a little too much energy for very young children however I’m fine older children and adults.

Absolutely Adorable Aimee

Hi everyone!

I’m Oliver, a darling little ball of fluff and fun who only is seven months old. My foster mom says I am just about the cutest kid on the block. I exude cuteness. I personify cuteness. I am the epitome of cuteness! That’s what she says. (Can you tell she thinks I’m cute?)

I’m also a really fun-loving and energetic little bunny. (Did I say bunny – aw, gee, I really am a bichon!). I love people – and I love other dogs. My Uncle Bill says I haven’t met a dog I didn’t like. He also says I love to play (well, of course, Uncle Bill! I’m a silly puppy!) And while I do walk, I also kind of bounce ‘cause I have all this puppy energy.

Oh and did I mention I like to ride in the car (and often fall asleep before we even leave), am housebroken and very funny. Mom says I can be quite the entertainer (I sit and focus on her and have this funny expression on my face that makes her laugh!)

And (Mom says that this is an important ‘and’) I’m learning to be socialized and about this thing called ‘boundaries.’ She says that I had to learn that she was in charge and I had to listen to her. Mom convinced me that I’m not as wise as she is – and taught me some commands – like ‘sit’ and ‘down’ and ‘drop it.’ I like showing her that I understand and am a good little boy!

Isn’t that great? Mom has fostered many, many furkids and says I really want to learn and please!

Now about my toys! Well I love them almost as much as I love my doggy foster brothers and sister. They are great fun! I love to run with them and play this game they taught me called ‘Explore.’ I’m getting very good at it. Why you should see me run through the grass and find things. I’m really quite good!

My other hobbies include following Mom around, sleeping in the sun and getting belly rubs. I also love to snuggle.

Outgoing and Optimistic Oliver

Hello World,

My name is Chrissie and I’m a beautiful, sweet and loving little bichon girl of ten months who is playful, affectionate and energetic – and comes in a very cute little 12 pound package! (Silly Mom, I’m not in a package at all!) She says that while I am all white I have these amazing long apricot eye lashes!

Dad says I LOVE to give kisses and love to play. He says my tail also wags and love to give kisses. I’m also pretty entertaining. You see I like to play tug-of-war with my doggy foster brother and to chase tennis balls! I also LOVE to ride in the car! Mom says I sit on a lap and look forward (just like a person.) I never stick my head out the window – I just look straight ahead and enjoy going anywhere!

I’m crate trained and do not have separation anxiety. In fact when it’s time for Mom, Dad or the kids to go somewhere I just go into my crate, take my treats and lay right down. I don’t bark when the family is gone and I don’t bark when they come back in. I simply wait patiently for them with my tail wagging (they can hear that!), until they let me out again.

Mom says I’m housebroken, a really sweetie and that I want to devote myself to someone. Dad says I was a little shy around him at first, and I can be unsure of myself around new people and small children. I tend to bark at them initially, then I stand on my hind legs and beg to be petted. Slowly and surely I’m learning to overcome that. And I’m not wild about these things called ‘bicycles.’ They make a lot of noise and that scares me. I just need some reassurances right now.

Mom says I would do best in a home where I can receive lots of love and attention - a home with girls that want to play with me and even dress me up would be wonderful; a home with someone who likes to go on walks and rides and wants a little ‘girlfriend’ to join her would be ideal. And, of course, someone who is willing to help me become the bestest little bichon girl that I can be!

Cuddly and Captivating Chrissie

Hello World!

My name is Emmy- and I’m a little Bichon girl about three who is cute, loveable and very friendly. My foster Mom says I am 8 ½ pounds of love and some energy thrown in. She says I’m a little girl who is joyful, spunky and full of life (Can you tell she likes me?) and that I’m eager to please!

According to Dad I am a champion cuddler who loves other dogs and people! Dad says everyone I meet is my new best friend – and that includes big and little people and dogs!

I’m very playful and have lots of fun with my doggie foster brothers. We play chase and tug of war, and I am very good at sharing my toys! And while I really enjoy my furkid friends it is obvious that I’m a people person (well I’m really not a person but furkids are like people only with four legs!)

I love to be wherever Mom and Dad are. I’m learning so many things from them – like these words called ‘commands’, and how to walk on a leash, to come when my name is called and to lay down when asked. I try my very best to always do what I’m asked and to make people happy.

I’m working on my house training and am so good that I get to sleep in the big bed at night! It’s clear to see that I’m smart and adaptable oh! And did I mention cuddly? Mom says that I have the makings of a fine canine citizen. So if you are looking for a little bundle of love, then look no further – I’m the girl for you! There are so many things that I love to do that it is hard to choose just one. I love to play with my toys and to play ‘chase’ and ‘keep away.’ (I’m teaching Mom how to play too, and she is getting much better! ) I like to ride in the car and look out the window. But maybe my very favorite thing of all is to cuddle! I love to cuddle on the bed and cuddle on the couch and, of course, cuddle on your lap. Oh and I also love to cuddle in my blanket and in my doggy bed!

Mom says I also know how to do a lot of ‘useful’ things. For example, I am learning commands, and how to walk on a leash and I’m completely potty-trained. How's that for smart? (And how happy that makes mom too! She says I’m such a good girl.)

My very favorite thing in the world is to be with my people. Mom says I am a gentle girl, who just yearns for attention. I need somebody to give me lots of love – and I give it right back too. Also, I am more interested in being with people than with other furkids. I would be happy to be the only furkid, too, so that I can give, and receive, lots of love. I'm just a special little girl who is longing to make someone very happy.

I’m very sweet, housebroken, and I like to ride in the car. I give lots of doggy kisses – and that I’m very good at stealing hearts (I told Mom I’m a good girl and I would never steal anything. She just smiled and patted my head.)

While I love to play with my doggy foster brothers and sisters, I’d really prefer to be with my special person or persons! We could walk and run and go for rides then go sit and cuddle and cuddle and cuddle. (Did I tell you I’m a great cuddler? Well I am!)

Mom says to tell you also that I’m very smart and I need someone who will let me know that I’m not in charge – and is an ‘alpha owner.’ I cannot be adopted by someone who is not dog savvy or has not had a dog in a long time. Having a special person or two (no children please) would be my idea of heaven and I will be the perfect little girl in that environment!

Charming, Charismatic and Cuddly Charlie

Hi People,

My name is Tucker and I’m a darling bichon mix of one who is a somewhat shy, gentle and adorable little guy. (That’s according to my foster family ‘cause I’m not one to brag!) I’m great with other dogs and outstanding with children. (And if there are kids in the house or on the street, why I love to greet them and make them feel welcome. In fact, Mom says when I see children I get so excited I can hardly contain myself. I think she means that I really, really like the energy and fun of being with kids – and that I’m always gentle and kind to them.). (I’m that way with most big people, too!)

My Auntie Pat says that I am a great walker (I hold my head and tail high and so that my tail flies like a flag) and a great rider (in the car, that is!) She says I never try to push my way into the driver seat, either!

I’m also a very playful boy and a very good sport. While I enjoy the company of my doggy foster brother and sisters at home, I’m also just about the most amazing guy you could ever take to the dog park. When I’m there I run like the wind and love to be chased! I also like to greet other dogs at the park. If they want to play, that’s great. If not, I just play independently. Can you tell that I just L-O-V-E the dog park (about as much as I love kids!)

Another thing Mom wants you to know about me is that I’m a morning person – I mean dog! When Mom opens the blinds in the morning I sit on the sofa and just watch what’s going on in the neighborhood. I’m not a barker, though. Mom says I’m just an ‘observer of life!’ I’m housebroken (love the new doggy door – thanks Mom!) and know some commands. I’m crate trained but Mom says I’m versatile ‘cause I can sleep on a doggy bed on the floor or on the Big Bed with the other bichons. (Lucky for us there’s lots of room and I’m a very good boy!)

My favorite things to do include playing with my stuffed toys and, more importantly, with a doggie about my same size. I can wrestle and race and play all day long (but I’m very quiet and gentle when I do. There’s no barking or growling from me!) Mom says sometimes I play in absolute silence – and that’s something she has never seen before!)

My wish for Christmas is a home with an active family and another dog or two. And if my family could take me on lots of walks and to the dog park, I would think I was in heaven. If I sound like the kind of furkid you are looking for, please complete our application – and ask for me!

My name is Lucky and I am a very handsome and happy Bichon of about eleven with a calm and mellow personality. Mom says to tell you that I’m housebroken and easy-going. I like walks and rides in the car. Dad says I’m amazingly cool in the car - I just watch the scenery go by and am happy to be with my family.

Because I have a hearing loss, Mom has taught me hand signals. And since I’m smart and want to please, I do everything I can to be near her. She says I just gaze up at her with my beautiful brown eyes and give her dreamy looks – and she’ll give me whatever I want. (More belly rubs please!)

I am such an easy going guy that I will do well in just about any family situation. Especially if you are home a lot! It would be nice (but not necessary) to have other furkids. Hello Everybody!

My name is Nicky and I’m a bichon mix of about one, with big brown eyes (that smile) and a great personality to match. I’m a snuggler and a lover, athletic and affectionate – and I’m looking for my forever home.

Mom says I’m unique in many ways. Why I rarely bark (even when people come to the door!), love visiting the neighbors (I think of everyone as my new best friend) – and I’m so friendly that even a stranger can walk me. I’m an athletic guy with a big heart and a smile on my face all the time. (And Mom says when my hair grows back I will be as handsome as I am affectionate and athletic!)

Even though I’m not technically a puppy, I love to play like one. And my favorite ‘toys’ are my stuffed monkey and tennis balls! If you give me a tennis ball, I will chase and bounce it for myself -- then I prance over and jump on it, with a happy smile. Mom and Dad are teaching me to ‘fetch’ to take advantage of all this talent!

By the way I also like to play with my squeaky toy and my rope toy. Mom says I was playing ‘keep away’ with a little girl just the other day. I would crouch down when she approached me with my toy, then leap away and circle and run with her. She liked that game a lot – and so did I. Dad says I do well with kids of all ages! I like people and kids are people too!

Also, not to brag, but my Mom and Dad say that I’m a pretty smart little guy who easily adapted to life at our house. I learned house training immediately (and have excellent bladder control. I also learned commands very quickly. Mom says I can do ‘sit’ all day long, understand ‘‘stay’ and really want to please. And I know the word “stop”. For example, if I was (accidentally) chewing on something and Mom told me “stop!”, I would stop right away. Not that I’m saying that happened, of course. The point is, I’m an easy guy to train.

One other thing Mom wants me to tell you is that I put my paws out like I want to ‘hug’ you. In fact, if you get near me, I will snuggle right away. If my whole day could be spent playing and then snuggling, and then playing and then snuggling, I would be the happiest guy on earth. How does that sound to you? Hi Everyone,

My name is Billy but mom calls me Billy Boy. I’m a darling little bichon boy of about one who is sweet, friendly, happy as they come and who loves to give kisses and cuddle. I had a pretty rough start before I became a furkid.

You see I escaped from my yard and was hit by a car. My leg was broken and I had a very special surgery with a very long name. I now have this funny ‘device’ on my leg until it heals. Mom says I’m supposed to be careful and not be too active. Gosh, Mom, are you sure that’s right because I feel just fine already! Dad says I want to run and play just like all furkids - but mom says I need to rest a bit longer.

In the meantime I love playing with my squeaky toys and trying to play with my doggy foster sister! She’s coming around slowly but Mom thinks I’m a really good influence! My very most favorite part of the day is when I get to go on walks or ride in my stroller. I love being out and ‘seeing the sights.’ I’m such a happy fellow, too! Everything in my world is great: people, other dogs, the trees, sunshine – you get the idea!

After our walks, I love to cuddle up with mom and dad and have my ears scratched. If you look closely you can see the smile on my face. And to watch me you would never know I had a care in the world!

Once my leg heals I will be able to go home with my forever family. If you have kids or other furkids for me to play with and enjoy that would be great. And if you have room in your heart and home for a bright, happy, loving and very resilient Bichon, then I could be the boy for you.

Hello Everybody!

My name is Nicholas and I have quite a story to tell. Let me start by telling you I am a miracle! And that is a testament to my spirit, determination and the amazing care that my foster mom Danna gives me every day.

You see I was hit by a car on Dec. 16th, dragged for several blocks and thrown into a dumpster. But I was determined to be heard – and to get another chance – so I got lucky that rainy day and became a FurKid.

Now that my legs have healed I am making my way in the world. Mom says I am a real trooper, never complain about anything, whimper or cry. Instead I have this happy smile on my face and I make a game and fun out of anything.

Dad says I am playful, silly and always a gentleman. For example I LOVE my yellow "loofah dog". I love to shake him back and forth, fling him in the air and catch him. Not bad for a guy whose legs are healing, right? Dad says it is cute and funny to watch me "groom" my stuffed toys. I like to lick them and give them little "nips" to groom them. He says it's really funny to see how careful and determined I am with that grooming. I also like to play tug-o-war with my doggy foster sister. In the end I always let her have the toy because I am a gentleman!

Mom says I also have this "‘thing" about balls, large and small. I even like the big medicine ball we use for my physical therapy. My favorite non-toys however are pine cones. I like to pick them up, give them a good shake, fling them in the air, catch them - and chew them up There is no doubt that I am very entertaining.

I am crate trained, good with other dogs and cats, love to ride in the car, can walk amazingly fast and get along great with people of all sizes and shapes. I am now doing physical therapy every week so I can regain strength and function in my back legs. Soon I can also begin to meet adopters, too, because Mom and Dad agree that I deserve the very bestest forever home in the world.

By the way, the clinic Mom takes me to every day has a nickname for me that also describes me to a "‘t." See if you can figure it out (I am going to give you a hint right now. They love me there and say that my name could be Crash - C is for CUTE, R is for Remarkable, A is for Adorable, S is for Super and H is for Heroic. Put them together and they spell Crash (but you can call me Nicholas.)

Ice and Ice Water are Fatal to Your FurKid!

Often times, we give our dogs ice cubes and ice water to help them cool off, especially during the hot summer weather. Most of us are not aware, but ice water and ice cubes are extremely dangerous and potentially fatal for our little companions.

Baran's Story

On Saturday, Baran's owner gave him a handful of ice cubes in his water bowl to help him cool off from a busy and exciting day. After checking on him to see if he had cooled down, his owner fed him. Suddenly, one of her friends stated that Baran seemed like he was choking. She went over and checked on him and Baran was dry heaving and drooling. They noticed he had not eaten any of his food, but he was in some sort of distress and was definitely bloated.

His owner tried to get him to burp, but was unable to and rushed him to the vet clinic. They were able to stabilize Baran and surgically checked to make sure there was no damage to any of his vital organs. The vet informed his owner that the ice water she gave Baran caused violent muscle spasms in his stomach which caused the bloating. Luckily for this boy, he is doing great and is recovered.

There is never a reason to give a dog ice water or ice! Normal water at room temperature, or cooling with cold towels on the inner thigh, are the best ways to help cool your Fluffy down. If a person falls into a frozen lake, what happens to the muscles? They cramp. This is the same as a dog's stomach.

Natural Balance Pet Food Product Alert!

Bichon FurKids has been recommending the Natural Balance® L.I.D. Limited Ingredient Diets® Potato & Duck Dry Formula for many months and our furkids seem to do well on it. Unfortunately, some of our furkids have recently experienced severe stomach problems (diarrhea and vomiting) that may be linked to this product. The company has put a notice on their web site indicating a change in the Duck and Potato formula and stating that dogs should be "transitioned" to this new formula. THERE IS NO CHANGE TO THE PRODUCT PACKAGING THAT WILL DRAW YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS ISSUE. We have found that packages with expiration dates through September, 2009 seem to be the old formula and those in October are the new formula that may be causing the problems. We found this out the hard way when we had several dogs become sick and could find no cause. A rep at a local pet food store alerted us to the issue when we returned a bag that appeared to have discolored kibbles and that some of our dogs would not eat.

This is part of the note on their web site. "A very small percentage of dogs with sensitive stomachs may experience a temporary digestive upset with the formulation change to the Potato & Duck Formula. For this limited number of dogs, we recommend feeding smaller, more frequent meals, combined with the old formula (if available), over a 5 to 7 day period to adjust to the new formula."

Cocoa Mulch ~ Deadly to Dogs and Cats

One of our dog agility friends experienced a tragedy and wanted me to pass a special message along to all of my dog loving friends and family.

The doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. They loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their dog Calypso decided that the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasn't acting lethargic in any way.

The next day, Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk. Half way through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly.

Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further investigation on the company's website, this product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and cats. Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey's, and they claim that 'It is true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual dog). However, 98% of all dogs won't eat it.'

Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman's Garden Supply and other Garden supply stores, contains a lethal ingredient called 'Theobromine'. It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks. Just a word of caution, check what you are using in your gardens and be aware of what your gardeners are using in your gardens.

Theobromine is in all chocolate, especially dark or baker's chocolate which is toxic to dogs. Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, a xanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine.

Plastic Bags in Common Food Products Can Be Very Dangerous

Ella's Story

A 9 month old Sheltie puppy, Ella, suffered a tragic, sudden, senseless death recently. She suffocated to death on a bag liner that was inside a box of Cheez-its snack crackers. The owners were out for the evening and someone had left abox of Cheez-its within Ella's reach. She put her head in the bag inside the box to get to the crackers. The bag came out of the box but Ella couldn't get the bag off of her head. When her owner's came home they found her dead from suffocation. It doesn't seem possible, that a dog couldn't get a bag off their head, but they can't.

This occurs more often than you would imagine. There was also a family whose 6 year old Labrador got hold of a Doritos bagw hen they weren't looking. They found him dead with the bag over his head, having died the same way as Ella.

Make surethat ALL PLASTIC BAGS AND BOXES WITH BAG LINERS IN THEM (chips, snack crackers, cookies, cereal, etc.) are WAY out of your pets reach! Please share this story with your friends and save someone else from this type of horrific tragedy.

DANGEROUS TOY -- VERY IMPORTANT

Chai's Story

On Sunday, June 22, 2008 my 10-year old lab mix, Chai, sustained a severe injury from a product that the company Four Paws Inc, produces. The toy I'm referencing is the pimple ball with bell. (Item #20227-001, UPC Code 0 4566320227 9)

While chewing on the toy, a vacuum was created and it effectively sucked his tongue into the hole in the ball. From speaking with my vet, this likely occurred because there is not a second hole in the ball preventing the vacuum effect from happening. I became aware of this when Chai approached a friend at my home whimpering with the ball in his mouth. She tried unsuccessfully to remove the ball but the tongue had swollen and could not be released.

Albertson stores in both Southern Cal and Nevada have announced a voluntary recall of Pedigree Small Crunchy Bites due to potential Salmonella contamination. Cases of Xylitol Poisoning in Dogs Rise

A sugar substitute found in a variety of sugar-free and dietetic cookies, mints and chewing gum is proving highly toxic, even fatal, to snack-snatching dogs.

Xylitol, an alternative-sweetener, can be "very, very serious" to dogs when ingested, says Dana Farbman, spokeswoman for the Animal Poison Control Center of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Warning about Rawhide products - and your pets

Pets with a history of vomiting, diarrhea, allergies and those who are on a special diet should generally not have rawhide. The material in the rawhide probably is not a problem for most dogs, although some can be allergic to it, and we all know it is fairly common for Bichons to have some allergies.

The real problem is that some dogs have a tendency to swallow too large a piece of the rawhide -- and it can get stuck in their esophagus, stomach or intestines, requiring it to be removed surgically. So, rawhides are particularly dangerous for dogs who prefer to swallow rather than chew. While rawhide can become slimy and swallow-able, it can also be easily lodged in the bowel if not chewed into small pieces. If you want to give your dogs things to chew on, please watch them the first few times they chew one and make sure they CHEW (rather than try to 'down' the whole thing in one gulp.) Also - avoid the rawhide chews and bones with the knots on the ends. Dogs have been known to chew the knots off and choke to death when they get caught in their throats. The knots also cause complications in their stomachs and digestive systems when swallowed whole.

You can buy rawhide that has been "minced" then pressed together which isn't as hard on dogs (It is known as compressed rawhide). CET chews are recommended by many veterinarians as a plaque preventative and are made of compressed rawhide.

Always supervise your dog while he/she is chewing a rawhide product. If the chew becomes small enough then discard it, as a dog attempting to swallow a rawhide can also die of suffocation. If you choose to give your dog rawhide products, choose natural rawhide that is free range, hormone free and produced in a way which is fit for human consumption.

If you notice your dog vomiting a clear or yellow bile, that can be a common symptom of a dog whose stomach is having a negative reaction to a product. As always, if you are not sure of something, please check with your veterinarian.

Every week a number of fur kids become part of Bichon Fur Kids. They are in foster care - and not yet listed on our web site. While they are part of these very giving foster families, the new fur kids are receiving lots of love, learning how to walk on leashes, ride in cars, frolic in the grass - and experiencing being around children, other dogs and sometimes cats! Our goal is for them to become the very best dogs that they can be - and to find their Forever Homes as soon as they are ready.

“Making a Difference in a Dog's Life”

Hi Bichon Lovers,

The first issue of our 2012 newsletter is here – and we are happy to share it with you. We hope you will find it an enjoyable read, with good information, interesting articles and a very special poem.

We are moving into gear for the Spring Bichon Bash in Irvine (mark your calendars for May 19th) and continuing to look for a venue to host a Fall Bichon Bash in San Diego. If you want to lend your talents to helping with the Spring Bash or securing a location for the Fall Bash, please email Michele (michele@bichonfurkids.org) or Marti (marti@bichonfurkids.org.) We’d love your thoughts, insights and assistance!

Our newest litter of furkids arrived on Jan. 6th. When we rescued Holly from a San Diego shelter in mid December neither the shelter, nor BFK, knew she was pregnant. When our vet examined her, however, and discovered that she was, all kinds of plans began to unfold. Thanks to Tina and Bernie Kress, Holly found a safe and loving foster home in which to have her litter – and seven pups came into the world in time to greet the new year. We hope you will help us get the word out so that these bichon mixes (mixed with cuteness) will find their forever homes, too.

There is a new little guy named Billy who has become a FurKid. You can read about him on our web site under Help Me Heal. He is a darling little bichon, about two years old, who was hit by a car. His injuries were so severe that Billy is only the second FurKid in 9 years whose injuries required several pins and a device to keep them in place (called an external fixator.) The first time I saw that it conjured up visions of the Flintstones! Billy is being a trooper and our hats are off to Diane and Dave Vazquez for fostering this little guy, as his surgery and recovery were FAR more extensive than any of us knew! Thanks, Diane and Dave!

There is also a very special program we want to tell you about called the Forever Foster program. Launched in January 2010 by a generous donor who wished to be anonymous, the program has helped several ‘special pups’ to find forever homes, yet assisted by BFK to address their unique medical needs. The program is described in more detail in the newsletter and on our web site. A Word About Hair

Bichons and Bichon mixes need to be groomed regularly. When not tended to, their hair (not fur) tends to grow very long and then mat if not brushed or combed. The kindest thing we can do, when we take in a dog in this condition, is to shave it down.

In a matter of weeks, beautiful, white, healthy hair will grow. So, if you see a dog that's available and it's a little short on hair... know that it will be a beautiful white, fluffy, haired darling within a few weeks. Read Ace's story.

Our Special Angels

Each month a very special little angel comes into rescue – a little bichon whose needs are greater than the others. For most of them to be ‘whole’ requires a major surgery. Each of these little angels has a special story to tell and is an inspiration for those of us that rescue and love them.

You can contribute to their well being, sponsor a special angel or help us to foster him or her when it is time to leave the hospital. Whatever you do helps these fur kids, and the ones that follow, to live healthier and better lives, will be rewarding to them and to you – and we thank you for your support.

Forever Foster Program

In January 2010 Bichon FurKids launched our Forever Foster program. Our vision was to make it possible to care for those bichons who, because of health, temperament, age or background, might not be good candidates for adoption. We felt strongly then, and now, that despite their special needs, whatever they might be, these dogs should live out their lives in loving homes, being cared for with respect and dignity.

The program was launched as a result of a generous donation from an adopter and bichon-lover who wishes to remain anonymous. All donations to that Fund are managed separately; BFK continues to look for opportunities to expand and grow the fund. That was the genesis of our Forever Foster Program and continues to be its mission.

The dogs accepted into the Forever Foster Program are very special pups. Some have chronic health problems which require an unusual amount of care and expense; some are severely disabled; others are elderly or have terminal medical conditions. Euthanasia is not an option for these dogs unless their quality of life is compromised. Instead, their medical expenses are covered by Bichon FurKids while their foster moms and dad provide the physical care and love they need and deserve.

In order for us to maintain the best quality of life for our Forever Fosters, we require additional assistance in the form of donations. The donations we receive through our Adoption Program can never cover the medical expenses we have accumulated in the care of rescued dogs. If you would like to become a special part of one these little furkids’ lives, please consider becoming a Sponsor. A Sponsor can make monetary donations or provide supplies for their use in the Forever Foster Home. Sponsorships may be one time donations or timed payments to help cover the costs of medical care, treatment or recovery All monetary and material donations will go to the particular Forever Foster dog you specify.

Please consider supporting our cause and our Forever Foster Program. Your financial gift will help us continue to save many more dogs, and to provide our Forever Fosters a life of ease and contentment. Special Angel Nicholas -- Hit and Run Survivor!

Hi people,
My name is Nicholas and I'm a friendly and fearless little bichon boy who is also very special. You see, someone was driving VERY fast and didn't see me. He hit and dragged me for several blocks - then threw me in a dumpster!

But I wanted to get out - and live life - so I made a lot of noise and suddenly I was on my way to being rescued. While I didn't look very good, and my back legs were badly scraped and bruised (my aunties at BFK have the pictures if you have the courage to see them) my heart was strong and I'm determined to recover fully. Why my foster mom says I don't act like a guy who has any limitations. I'm happy, loving and even playful.

My care has been long and a bit complicated. My legs have healed and I'm learning to use them again. I have a very special cart that helps me to get around - and I'm pretty quick even without 'my wheels.'

If you would like to help me get better and even meet me some day, I'd love that. The most important thing to know is that I'm lucky and happy to be alive. And I'm determined to walk again on all four legs and then jump into your lap and give you kisses.

Adoption Application and Our Process

Bichon FurKids Rescue wants to adopt Bichons, Bichon mixes and their canine buddies to a person or family who is/are willing to provide a loving forever home in which the dog’s health and well-being is taken care of responsibly.

We believe that adopting a dog is a commitment to the lifetime of this dog as your companion animal. We appreciate your willingness to complete this form so that we can learn more about you, your family and home environment. Because we take pet guardianship very seriously, we will carefully check your references. As a result, we hope that we will be able to place one of our dogs with you. Not every person who applies and desires to adopt a dog from us, however, will be qualified. People who work full time outside of the home and cannot, for example, provide for doggy day care or for the dog to stay with a human companion while they are working, are generally not considered appropriate adopters for bichons who desire to be loving companions and members of a family.

Once you have submitted this application, please know that the next step is that you will be contacted by a volunteer to schedule a home safety check. That generally occurs within 48 hours of us receiving the application however we are an all-volunteer organization -- so please understand if it takes us a bit longer. Additional information as to our process can be reviewed on our web site under Our Process.

Our adoption fee is $350 for most dogs over a year old; our dogs are up to date with shots, spayed or neutered, and ready to become a part of a forever family. Many of them are also microchipped. All come with supplies including a bed, blanket, leash, collar, harness, food, vitamins and training CD. Many are already trained and all are socialized. Unlike some other groups, we do not separate a bonded pair and there is a fee for each dog. For senior dogs in bonded pairs the fee will be negotiated and quoted to the prospective adopters prior to adoption. For our puppies, under one year, the adoption fee is $500.

Bichon FurKids Rescue (BFK) is a charitable not-for-profit organization. Our goal is to rescue Bichons, Bichon mixes and other small dogs who can no longer live with their original guardian or guardians. We believe that each life is meaningful and that all 'Fur Kids' deserve to live out their lives as loving companions in forever homes. BFK volunteers believe that our animal companions deserve to be cherished, cared for and protected. The 5th Annual "Home for the Holidays" Pet Adoption Fair

This is BFK's last adoption event of this year (although we will be adopting throughout the month, of course.) We will be at Home for the Holidays with some adoptable furkids – and hope you will come to meet them (and us. )

Surrender Form and Agreement

Bichon FurKids Rescue wants to help Bichons and Bichon mixes that can no longer be cared for by their owners. Our primary mission, however, is to rescue those who are in shelters and whose original guardians have abandoned or rejected them, rather than famililes who may have not made provisions for bichons in their care or in the care of other family members. As a result we look very carefully at every surrender application that is submitted and evaluate each on the basis of the application itself.

Our surrender fee is assessed on a case by case basis and ranges depending on the age and health status of the dog. Our fees start at $150. If you are requesting that BFK consider your dog, he or she should be clean, up to date with shots, spayed or neutered, and ready to become a part of a forever family. We will contact you to arrange a time to evaluate your dog - and will advise you of the surrender fee after evaluating your dog. And, unlike some other groups, we do not separate a bonded pair generall. Additionally, with a bonded pair, there is a surrender fee for each dog.

We'll need some pictures too of the bichon you want to surrender. Ideally, pictures should be taken in natural lighting, like in a well lit room or outdoors. Try to get some pictures while he/she is active (such as romping in the yard, riding in the car or playing with a toy.) A snuggly shot or two would also be good to include. Try to avoid taking pictures looking down at him/her. (It's best to keep your camera at eye level with your dog.)
